The Twins at 2 Days Old

The boys continue to progress as they adjust. Twin A was transferred out of the intensive care unit into a regular NICU room. He had his first meal at 3:00- we will find out if he is digesting well at his next feeding, which will be at 6:00. The boys are being fed via tube right now. Until they are a little more mature (probably 34-35 weeks) it is just two much effort for them to manage breathing/ sucking/ swallowing at the same time. Twin A should also be ready for us to hold him starting tomorrow. I am sure looking forward to that!

Twin B is also doing well- he was quite bothered by the mask he was wearing to help him breath yesterday, so they changed it to a standard nasal canula. The nasal canula looks so much less invasive, so I asked the nurse why they didn't use one in the first place, and her answer: there wasn't one available at the time he was born. Go figure! He also had meals at 12:00 and 3:00. They checked his tummy at the 3:00 feeding, and he was digesting just fine, so they'll be able to continue feeding him.

I also forgot to mention yesterday that we still are not sure if the boys are fraternal or identical twins. There is a fairly good chance that they are identical, as they were sharing a placenta (they had separate sacs). The other possibility (though less likely) is that the placentas fused together. We should find out after the placenta is analyzed.

Shmuli got to see his brothers briefly last night, but he won't get a really good look until on the weekend during children's visitation time. We are so looking forward to it!
